Rimage and Sonic Solutions Make DVD On Demand a Reality

10/10/2007
Rimage Corporation (Nasdaq: RIMG) today announced its on-demand digital publishing systems will support the Qflix technology licensing and certification program based on the recently approved industry specifications for securely recording electronic downloads set by the DVD Copy Control Association (CCA).

Qflix enables the legal, on-demand burning of encrypted video content to DVDs playable on standard and high-definition players. Rimage is now able to provide its customers with the new Qflix-enabled technology, developed by Sonic Solutions, Inc. and seamlessly integrated into the Rimage disc publishing platform.

Qflix is a content licensing and certification program that empowers factory, in-store and in-home disc producers to create on-demand movies and video programs on DVD. Using Content Scramble System (CSS) encryption, designed to prevent unauthorized copying, individuals will be able to legally download their favorite movies or television programs to DVD. Before Qflix, there was no technology standard for encrypting DVD media that was burned on-demand, effectively precluding DVD production at retail using in-store kiosks and photo lab replication systems.

"There is true alignment between Rimage's initiatives and Sonic's impressive work on the development of the Qflix ecosystem. We have been collaborating with Sonic for some time and now look forward to offering this new solution to our customers, including our large existing footprint in the retail space," said Dave Suden, chief technology officer for Rimage. "Working with Sonic, Rimage has created a tightly integrated, highly reliable digital manufacturing solution that will allow retailers and centralized fulfillment centers to take a leading role in offering customers a wide variety of on-demand digital entertainment."

Rimage has been a pioneer in on-site disc manufacturing for the retail industry since the late 1990s, when the company and its partners began offering music-on-demand services to major retailers. In 2007, Rimage launched its Digital Manufacturing Center, a turnkey package for content delivery and digital output that allows retailers to boost revenues by offering customers several digital products and services from a centralized location.

"Rimage's experience in retail content delivery systems makes them an ideal partner," said Jim Taylor, senior vice president and general manager for Sonic's Advanced Technology Group. "The Qflix-ready products from Rimage will serve as an ideal complement to the wide variety of solutions that Sonic technologies will help establish and, just as importantly, will provide consumers with more convenient access to a broader range of digital entertainment."

Rimage is uniquely qualified to deliver DVD content-on-demand. With installations in major fulfillment centers and several major retailers around the world, Rimage understands customers' needs for robust functionality and reliability. Rimage's modular software and hardware is designed for easy expansion of addition of capabilities, allowing Rimage to work with integrated partners like Sonic and create expanded content-on-demand products and services.

Rimage provides a full range of disc publishing equipment for its customers; from entry-level inkjet systems designed for smaller retailers to high-capacity thermal retransfer printing systems for large retailers and enterprise locations. Rimage's existing retail solutions allow for easy upgrades to support the Qflix standard. Rimage's high-resolution, full color Everest? printer delivers permanent direct to disc surface printing that rivals mass produced discs for quality, giving customers the same professional-looking CDs and DVDs they are accustom to purchasing at retail.

"With high reliability, exclusive features and unmatched performance, Rimage systems truly deliver, minimizing consumer waiting times and helping generate the highest possible store revenue for retail customers," said Suden. "Our seamless integration with Qflix will allow Rimage to expand its digital content offerings to retailers and fulfillment centers. In addition to movies, Rimage retail systems can offer photo slideshows, music downloads, and a variety of other content on demand."
